Decision log

A decision log your AI keeps: what you chose, what you didn't, and why. Ask it later why you decided something.

For teams and founders who keep re-arguing settled questions.

Decision log

Every decision worth remembering: what you chose, what you didn't, and why. Future you will ask.

Decisions

Stay on Postgres, 29 September

  • Context: notes grew to 2 million rows and search got slow.
  • Options: a document store, a search service, or better indexes.
  • Chose: Postgres with a trigram index.
  • Why: one database to run, and the index made search 40 times faster.
  • Revisit: at 20 million rows.

The note after a few days of talking to your AI. Tinted lines are what it added, the way Amber Notes shows an AI's changes, with Undo and the earlier version kept in the note's history.

What the prompt does

Your AI creates a note called “Decision log” in your Work folder, or finds the one you already have, and learns how to keep it. Every decision worth remembering: what you chose, what you didn't, and why. Future you will ask.

Paste it once into a chat in ChatGPT or Claude with Amber Notes turned on, or into Claude Code.

Then just talk to it

  • We decided to stay on Postgres instead of moving to a document store.
  • Why did we pick Stripe over Paddle?
  • What's still undecided?

For ChatGPT or Claude

First, look for a note called "Decision log" in my Amber Notes with search_notes. If there isn't one, create it with create_note in the folder "Work", using exactly the markdown at the end of this message, the <!-- pane-table --> line included (it gives the table's columns their types). Then: Use my Amber Notes note "Decision log". When I tell you about a decision, add it at the start of "Decisions" with append_to_note (at_start): a "###" heading with the decision in a few words and the date, then Context, Options we considered, What we chose, Why, and When to revisit, one short line each. If I haven't said why, ask. Questions we haven't decided yet go under "Open questions"; when one is decided, remove it from there with edit_note. When I ask why we did something, search my notes with search_notes and quote the entry.

First, look for a note called "Decision log" in my Amber Notes with search_notes. If there isn't one, create it with create_note in the folder "Work", using exactly the markdown at the end of this message, the <!-- pane-table --> line included (it gives the table's columns their types). Then: Use my Amber Notes note "Decision log" for this project's technical decisions. When we settle on an approach (a library, a schema, an architecture), add an entry at the start of "Decisions" with append_to_note (at_start): a "###" heading with the decision and today's date, then Context, Options we considered, What we chose, Why, and When to revisit. Name the files or modules it affects. Before proposing a change that touches one of these, read the note with read_note and check we're not undoing a decision.

The note you start with

This is what the prompt creates in Amber Notes: an ordinary note with the headings ready. Your AI fills it in from there, and you can still edit every line yourself.
